Hornbeck is inspecting the area of which the trial will take place. He wants to get a glimpse of what the place looks like, and just take a moment to think before it's buzzing with people and journalists the next day. He is comparing it to a battlefield, because the courtroom and battlefield are both places where no one wants to be. In which case, bullets fly through the battlefield, and accusing words and arguments fly through the courtroom.
